Martyn Joseph
The Studio@TPS, Petersfield
Friday 5th December 7.30pm
£15.00/£17.50 advance /door
It might be just another evening when you go in to a Martyn Joseph concert – but it certainly won’t be when you come out.....
Few singer songwriters have the hammer blow “once seen, never forgotten” effect of this colossally talented and charismatic Welshman – one of acoustic music’s brightest stars.
Shades of Springsteen, Knopfler and Dave Matthews there may be - but Joseph is a performer like no other - his diverse album Vegas deserving every one of its 4 stars in a recent MOJO review.
A mean guitar player with a powerful voice, Bob Harris has praised the ”outstanding lyrical intelligence” of his songs which can range from rock to blues, jazz and even, according to one critic , “funk folk”!
With a string of Top 50 hits to his name (including Dolphins Make Me Cry and Please Sir) he has been in demand on both sides of the Atlantic for over two decades, touring with the likes of Art Garfunkel and Jools Holland and winning fans everywhere with his uncanny fusion of material .
He has an enviable high energy connectivity with his audience whether it’s an arts centre in his native Wales or a 5,000 strong crowd at the Royal Albert Hall and he’s never devoid of a touch of wry, often topical humour.
He darts chameleon-like between mighty and meek songs, railing against the broken promise playground of global leaders, holding tight to anti war anthems and then “disarming” for unexpectedly fragile love songs.
Following on from a major US tour with Ani DiFranco and a busy summer of festivals here and in North America, Joseph embarks on this latest UK tour showcasing a new album – amazingly his 30th.
It traces the organic morphing of some of his best loved songs –the Kosovo lament The Good in Me is Dead, the fervent Proud Valley Boy of his roots and the exquisite Have An Angel Walk With Her – songs that have taken on a life of their own, delivered with ever more passion, sometimes barely recognisable now from their original format but all part of the constantly evolving musical journey of a man who never fails to deliver....
Here's some nice words other people have written about Martyn:
“ Britain ’s best kept secret…..a challenging songwriter and compelling and courageous live performer – MOJO Magazine
“Songs of social commentary as much as love, with a rootsy sensibility ” – Time Out
“A depth, resonance and emotional punch which belies comparison ” – Q magazine.
“One of the most charismatic and electrifying performers in Britain today ” –Tom Robinson, BBC 6

The Parlotones
Plus special guests Recreation, Beau Monde and The Vision
The Cellars at Eastney, Portsmouth
Tuesday 9th December 8pm
£7.00/£8.00 advance/door
Front man Kahn Morbee formed the band with his friend and drummer Neil Pauw
while they were in high school, Morbee later meeting guitarist Paul Hodgson at
University where they bonded after both being thrown out of the library for
playing guitar.
Completing the line up is Paul’s younger brother Glenn on bass.
Signed to Universal records on the back of their song ‘Beautiful’ being used by Fuji in a hit commercial, the band, who all hail from South Africa were added to that countries bill for Live Earth, granting them instant exposure to a huge new audience of fans.
The band hope that by putting themselves in the public eye they may pave the way for other South African bands to find a new audience too.
“Our success will hopefully put the spotlight on South African rock with more bands having the opportunity to show the world that we have got the goods… Keep a close eye out as we bring you step by step news on The Parlotones’ invasion of the civilised world.”
Their latest album RadioControlledRobot took the top prize at the South African Music Awards, confirming the bands status as the leading lights of South African music.
Not only that but FHM appropriated the track ‘Overexposed’ to use as the theme for their Worlds Hottest Women film.

Paul Jones and Dave Kelly
Plus special guest support
The Studio@TPS, Petersfield
Wednesday 10th December 7.30pm
£17.50/£20.50 advance /door
These long standing co-vocalists with The Blues Band get a big buzz out of taking things down a level, simplifying the music a little, and plying their trade as a duo, thus imbuing their very own personal and individual approaches to a dynamic, rootsy and exhilarating set of Country Blues.
Paul’s pedigree is unquestionable, having fronted Manfred Mann, followed by a successful solo career, forming The Blues Band and still touring with The Manfreds.
Similarly, Dave has long been regarded as the best in the UK, achieving many accolades for his guitar work and vocals.
He was voted Acoustic Artist of the Year in 1992, '94, '96, '97 and '98 by the British Blues Connection.
Venues large and small have been hushed and then enraptured by the sense of ‘old times’ in the Mississippi Delta they create.

Wilko Johnson
Plus special guests The Riotous Brothers
The Cellars at Eastney, Portsmouth
Wednesday 10th December 8pm
£13.50/£15.00 advance/door
Please note: each of the three previous Wilko Johnson shows at The Cellars have sold out in advance
Rhythm and blues guitarist Wilko Johnson’s notoriously manic live performances have been 30 years in the making.
His unique style and dress sense - black suit and pudding bowl haircut - first hit the headlines as a founder member of 1970s pub rock pioneers Dr Feelgood.
The on-stage mania continued in Ian Dury’s Blockheads and since the early 80s his choppy guitar style and intense presence have fronted his own trio - the Wilko Johnson band.
The pudding bowl hairstyle has long gone but Johnson’s on stage antics still captivate audiences.
Canvey Island-born Johnson formed Dr Feelgood shortly after finishing university in Newcastle.
The band became a mainstay of the 70s pub rock movement and their live LP Stupidity hit number one.
The Wilko Johnson band features fellow Blockhead Norman Watt Roy on bass and former Curve and Jesus and Mary Chain drummer Monti.

Frank Hamilton Band
At just 22 Frank Hamilton had a busy 2007, notching up several thousand miles on the clock of his one litre Vauxhall Corsa.
He released a couple of singles, got played by Edith Bowman on Radio One, was dubbed ‘the Mike Skinner of folk’ by Music Week had his latest single feature as XFM’s record of the week.
‘Friday Nights’ was the second release on Franks DIY label and demonstrates exactly why a buzz has centered around the Cambridge born wordsmith.
Penned after several messy nights in a pub where he and several other musical type folk (including Newton Faulkner & Nick Harrison) drank their student loans away, it was added to the XFM playlist upon the first mention of its release and encompasses everything that people love about Frank Hamilton and his music.
Reliant upon an honest and everyday approach to lyric writing, Franks sound centres around real words and catchy melodies, which are taken from the bedroom and crafted into a fresh and exciting blend of indie/folk.
Frank can often be found with his female counterpart, Helen Ruocco and it is their unique chemistry and vocal interplay that adds an innocence and depth to complete a recipe for success.
On nights when the joys of a full band and female eye candy aren’t available Frank performs alone. Such nights have developed a reputation for delivering something special.
Armed with just a guitar, harmonica, some choice words and a loopstation, the quality and relevance of the songs is able to shine through even more.
Here's some nice words other people have written about Frank:
"Described as ‘the Mike Skinner of folk’, Frank’s writing is every bit as engaging as the bands live show" - Music Week
“ Hamilton's success should be assured the moment the world hears how acutely his songs translate the real magic of love” - The Fly
“Frank Hamilton makes perky, pacey, tuneful indie that's not a million miles away from Liam Frost and Badly Drawn Boy's, but with a few more occasional ass-shaking elements. He's jolly good.” - Marsha Shandur, XFM
"Think upbeat Bright Eyes with a more friendly and accessible main vocal" - The Mag
“Very quirky, very British, very different!” – BBC
“At times vivaciously raw and gutsy, but always encouragingly melodic and lyrical” – Paul Richards
“The lyrics are well crafted and the songs arranged perfectly” - Chris Bradford: Executive Member of British Academy of Composers & Songwriters.
Check out Frank Hamilton's music: www.myspace.com/frankhamiltonband
Julian Perretta
Julian Perretta is a singer-songwriter born in north London.
At 16, he left school, auditioning succesfully for a course at the drama centre, RADA, Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in central London, intending to pursue a career as an actor.
When his course ended he began writing and producing material with the members of the band Jamiroquai, influenced heavily musically by artists such as David Bowie, Elton John, Supertramp and The Zombies. During that time he was introduced to Girls Aloud manager Hillary Shaw.
After much industry competition to sign the youngster, Sony Music executives signed him to a five album, worldwide recording deal to Columbia Records, aged 19.
In May 2008, Perretta joined Mark Ronson on a three week European Tour, where he sang The Smiths hit, "Stop Me."
Perretta signed an exclusive publishing agreement as a songwriter, with Universal Music Group in early 2008. He is currently working as a songwriter writer on various projects for other artists both in the UK and U.S.
His debut album is due for release mid 2009.

6 Day Riot
6 Day Riot march on from their successful debut album Folie A Deux with renewed
vigour and a refined sense of identity. Ideas are flowing thick and fast.
Rhythms are more eclectic and varied. Lyrics more focused. Live performances
more impassioned.
The bands musical palette has expanded the bluegrass/klezmer hybrid of album one to a sound distinctly and resolutely their own; fuelled by the creativity, imagination and technical ability of the players.
Hot on the heels of the EP release this summer album no 2 is scheduled for release at the start of '09
"Traditional English folk music has been dug over so many times that it is in danger of becoming barren, bands plant the same old seeds in the same soil, over and over again; thankfully some of our British cousins are practicing some sort of folk crop rotation.
They bring in klezmer and trumpet amongst others to add to the usual staples of drums, upright bass and guitar. With Tamara Schlesinger’s vocal travelling on the top like a jockey on the hump of a camel it makes for an interesting ride.
Here's some nice words other people have written about 6 Day Riot:
"...my favourite act of the festival (NXNE). The five piece, fronted by an adorable Scottish girl, work similar terrain as Beirut and DeVotchKa, which is to say indebted to old world, eastern European Gypsy-folk influences. But rather than the dramatic weight of those two acts, they offer up celebration and delight delivered with superb songs, musicianship and period costumes." Frank Yang - chromewaves (Canada)
"'Bring on the Waves' fizzes along with an enthused sense of invincibility, the hazards of rising sea levels or a floundering music industry receding in significance in their boisterous wake...6 Day Riot give every impression of being completely fearless - they’ve even released (the EP) on their own label, Tantrum Records. When the music is this good, it’s difficult not to think that their confidence is completely warranted." Room Thirteen 11/13
"...They will rock the boat, but manage to keep everyone on board smiling. Witty lyrics and their acoustic, old world charm will instantly win over listeners for life." Red Banana (USA)
"...splendid sound" - Gideon Coe - BBC 6 music
"Go! Canada...a great little single" - Steve Lamacq - BBC Radio 2

Jose Vanders
Plus special guests
The Cellars at Eastney, Portsmouth
Tuesday 6th January 7.30pm
£7.00/£8.00 advance/door
The best musicians start young. Jose Vanders first learnt piano at the age of three, courtesy of a keyboard bought by her grandparents.
Since then she has slowly transformed her house into something resembling a musical instrument showroom. Her front room contains more pianos than there are televisions in the whole house!
From 5 years old Jose worked through piano lessons, playing Ravel or Debussy between munches of chocolate.
Brought up on a strict diet of Labi Siffre, Cat Stevens and James Taylor, Jose’s father always encouraged her to learn by improvising around the music of Joni Mitchell, John Denver or fellow key basher Elton John.
At fourteen and with a boyfriend who played in local bands, Jose Vanders wrote her first song, about Aladdin’s magical lamp.
Sadly this has now been consigned to a file on her computer in the ‘What On Earth Was I Thinking??’ folder.
Songs about love, being dumped and Rhubarb Crumble followed as Jose began to master the craft of writing fleshed out, character driven tunes, culminating in an Open Mic performance in her hometown of Greenwich in 2006.
From there on things got bigger and better very quickly, from being featured on the infamous blog of Perez Hilton culminating in thousands of new American fans and some odd comments (including a complaint that her “Leeds accent ruined the song”).
The face of BBC3 in 2008, this young lady who cites Polly Paulusma as her favourite artist, is now on the brink of huge nationwide exposure.
Catch her at this intimate venue while you can, next time she’ll probably be playing somewhere far less intimate!

The Cellars at Eastney, Portsmouth
Wednesday 21st January 7.00pm
£6.00/£7.00 advance/door
Paper Heroes
With their rapid fire rhythms, growling vocals and inventive guitar riffs these songs stay hooked in your brain ready for rapid replay.
Indie-pop-rock at its exciting best.
Paper Heroes were formed in London early in 2008 when singer Matt Weedon sent his song, Jenny Jones, into a SkinsLife competition.
"It was the first ever song posted on the Skins Life site that made it into the show" – "we all love this track" wrote Skins Life and it was played on episode 9 of Skins in April 2008.
As a result, the band picked up prestigious SkinsLife After Party gigs in Cardiff, London and Birmingham.
The band are now developing songs for their first album with SkinsLife Records and have released a 3 song EP which is now available on iTunes.
Check out Paper Heroes' music: www.myspace.com/paperheroesmusic
Fran and Josh
'Fran and Josh' is the sound wave form of the term one size fits all.
They were recently the first unsigned band to play on 'live Drivetime' session on 'XFM Manchester' where they covered the song "Better off Alone" by Alice Deejay.
This troublesome doublesome of whippersnappers will soon be hitting the screens of MTV on 'Living on The Edge' series 2
www.mtv.co.uk/living-on-the-edge.
And you will also be able to catch them on MTV's Brand spanking new music website!
Originally their music developed from a love for flamenco.
Admiring artists such as Paco De Lucia, Rodrigo Y Gabriela and Tommy Emmanuel. By studying their fast paced and skillfull guitaring techniques they began to teach themselves from day one.
'Fran and Josh' have combined flamenco with true party music and in doing this they continue to cover many genres through the use of an acoustic guitar.

Institute students and alumni perform alongside the cream of musical output from the south coast. With some of the hottest touring bands emerging onto today’s’ music scene, MishMash never fails to be a great night!
Hjaltalín
Hjaltalín are Iceland’s newest about-to-be export.
Having been nominated for five of March 2008's Icelandic Music Awards they went on to win Best Songwriter - Högni Egilsson - and The Brightest Hope.
hey have been nominated for next year's Time for Peace Music and Film Awards for the song 'The Trees Don't Like the Smoke'.
heir debut album 'Sleepdrunk Seasons', released to great acclaim in Iceland last December, was produced by Benni Hemm Hemm and Gunni Tynes of múm.
The album is out now in Scandinavia and will hit the UK in November and the rest of Europe in January 2009. The release will be followed by a Europe-wide tour, including the UK in January.
Hjaltalín currently have a new song, ‘Thu komst vid hjartad í mér’, now topping the charts in Iceland. It’s a cover of a song by Iceland Disco singer Paul Oscar and translates as ‘You Touched My Heart’.
n Iceland Hjaltalín have played with artist such Jens Lekman, Akron/Family, Danielson, Annuals and Bloc Party; the last two at last years' Iceland Airwaves festival at the same venue on the same evening.
hey have only played outside of Iceland a handful of times.
Hjaltalín are from Reykjavik, a band as promising as any of the other beautiful and eclectic artists the country has thrown up.
With eight members, it’s difficult to know whether to call them a small orchestra, a mutated and overgrown rock band or something else entirely.
Besides the regular guitar, bass and drums, the band also comprises piano, accordion, bassoon, clarinet, cello and a violin, complementing the exquisite lilt of Högni and Sigga's vocals.
This unique group of instrumentalists form an allegiance which already has a very solid fan base amongst both critics and the public on home ground.
The rest of the world lies in wait and will surely be theirs in due course...
Line-up:
Axel Haraldsson - Drums
Ingimar Andersen - Clarinett
Gudmundur óskar Gudmundssson - Bass
Hjörtur Ingvi Jóhansson - Piano
Högni Egilsson - Singer/Guitar
Rebekka Bryndís Björnsdóttir - Bassoon
Sigrídur Thorlacius - Singer
Viktor Orri Arnason - Violin
Here's some nice word other people have written about Hjaltalín:
“Euphoric chamber pop” – NME
“Hjaltalín purvey melodic indie rock with a conspicuous bassoon, cello, three part brass section and usual rhythm section allowing them to alternate between full bloodied rock basslines and the soaring appeal of Sufjan Steven's heraldic approach. Epic promise.” - Clash Magazine
“What makes Hjaltalin ooze with potential, and more importantly, sound nothing like any of their revered countrymen at all is their unflinching knack at being able to craft both winsome pop tunes alongside audaciously experimental arrangements with seemingly effortless ease.” – Drowned in Sound
This is pure pop brilliance.” – New-Noise.net
The Icelandic collective's UK debut is cheeky and breezy - like fresh air in London, like the sound of the morning thaw” – Plan B
The pop melodies have a breadth of emotion and the sound is deep enough to provide aural pleasure” – Subba Cultcha

The Half Moon @ Putney, London
